Scripture Texts:
This Generation
In this passage, Jesus is talking about his cousin John (who is imprisoned by Herod.) It comes on the heels of identity questions about who Jesus is, and now, Jesus is talking about who John is – that he is the one sent to “prepare the way.” Jesus says some interesting and intriguing things, like, “To what shall I compare this generation…like children sitting in the marketplace and calling…we played the flute for you, and you did not dance.” Both Jesus and John are similarly rejected by “this generation.” Neither the repentance proclaimed by John, nor the good new proclaimed by Jesus gets a favorable hearing. What does this say about us? Are we like children in the marketplace? And as we follow the way of Jesus, the way prepared by John, can we expect to be received any differently than they were?
