Katherine grew up in a very loving and supportive Christian home in a town called Garner, just outside of Raleigh, North Carolina. She is the youngest of four children, all of whom still live in North Carolina with with the exception of her. She first moved to Richmond as an undergrad student at Virginia Commonwealth University. While she returned to North Carolina for graduate degree work in physical therapy at East Carolina University, she returned to Richmond to live and work.
As a young graduate, she was fortunate to be hired by Sheltering Arms Hospital and has been with them for thirty-four years. She has worked in different capacities over the years and is currently the Director of Rehab Services for St. Mary’s Hospital. She says, “My career choice has been very rewarding and I have loved my role of helping others become the best they can be with physical challenges. Health care in general has always had its challenges; however working with incredible patients, therapists and other health care providers throughout the years has been very rewarding and fulfilling.”
Katherine was looking for a church home that was welcoming, and, that wanted to care for the community around them. She found our church and familiarized herself with us through our website. She recalls her first visit, saying, “I was greeted by many that were so welcoming and inclusive. After attending and getting to know more of the members, and, listening to Mandy’s thought-provoking sermons, I knew that I wanted to be part of this family.”
Katherine joined the church during delicate days of discernment within the church regarding our future. She recalls those difficult days saying, “I have been inspired to observe how the members support and listen to one another during the difficult decisions and choices. I am sure that I will learn so much as a deacon regarding how to care for our members and support the life of our church. I am appreciative of the opportunity to serve such a great community of people.”
We ordained Katherine as a deacon on March 26th. “I was deeply touched by the blessings, advice, and words of thank you. Each touched my heart and made me so grateful to be a member of GPBC and to now serve as deacon to help care for the church.” And we are so grateful for your presence among us, Katherine! We look forward to being church together with you, to your ministry with us, and to serving God alongside you.
